Getting started¶
This manual is intended for teams that operate and administer a Farinha instance (SuperAdmins, Admins, and technical staff). It is not a manual for researchers or members of the public consulting the holdings.
What Farinha is¶
Farinha is free and open-source software for managing and publishing permanent archival holdings and memorial collections, with a focus on fonds and collections.
Main features:
- Home portal with customization options
- Compatibility with descriptive standards (NOBRADE/ISAD(G), ISAAR(CPF), and ISDIAH)
- Fonds with a NOBRADE hierarchy (for example: Fonds → Group → Subgroup → Series → Subseries → File → Item)
- Collections with a flexible hierarchy (for example: Collection → Series → Item)
- Custom fields for files and items in Collections
- Insertion and display of digital objects (text, image, audio, video), with resizing and optimization
- Full-text search and hierarchical navigation
- Support for multiple institutions, sectors, and teams with segmented permissions
- Queue-based task execution (for example: imports)
- Internationalization (i18n)
Where to start¶
- Install/update the instance: Linux (recommended) or Windows.
- Understand access profiles and manual validation (Curation): Users.
- Understand the structure and permissions by “Place”: Places.
- Tasks in the internal panel (Django Admin): SuperAdmin user.
- Institution settings (including manual validation): Institutions.
